Speaking Truth to Power

Let me state the definition of Truth upfront. Truth comes from the root word, True, which means factual, real, and authentic.

The term, Speaking Truth to Power, means telling the truth to anyone in authority. It implies respectfully standing up for what’s right, and confronting those in charge to make a correct change! This takes courage, conviction, tenacity, and faith to present such a case to anyone in authority.

So, I want you to know, however, that Truth is not exclusive of power (with emphasis on the word ‘of’). This means, speaking Truth doesn’t imply the factual statement is feeble, false, or fake. It doesn’t imply that the statement is ineffective, or of no useful substance. Therefore, Truth is inclusive of power. Truth has power, and speaking Truth is powerful.

I want you to also know, however, that Truth is not exclusive to power (with emphasis on the word ‘to’). This means, speaking Truth doesn’t imply the factual statement is not comprehensible, not tolerable, or not agreeable or applicable to those in power. Those in positions of power need to temper the power invested with the truth expected. Therefore, Truth is also inclusive of power. By having both truth and power, one will govern wisely.

I know silence has its place, and at times speaks volumes. But no doubt, you cannot remain silent and gated, when justice calls out a lie and falsehood propagated.

There is power in truth when spoken. Truth spoken is impartial to both the powerful and the powerless. Truth spoken is unbiased to titles, positions, popularity, and status.  Truth spoken is inerrant, infallible, and incorruptible. Truth spoken is actual and factual, and not situational and conditional.

One of the examples, I guess, of speaking truth to power, is seen in the Book of John 18:38, Pilate asked Jesus, what is Truth? It reads, “Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

Truth speaking to power, and power speaking to truth, concluded with Power finding in Him no fault with Truth. As we’ve heard, the fact is everyone cannot handle the truth!

  • The fact such as, Jesus is the Truth!
  • The fact such as, Lord thy word is Truth!
  • The fact such as, Let God be true and every man a liar!
  • The fact such as The truth shall set you free!

What makes truth powerful is its ability to speak to lies, deceit, falsehood, bribery, hypocrisy, disloyalty, and all forms of wickedness! The truth will illuminate works done in darkness, and presents them in the light!

Yes, we can gird your loins with truth. You have God-given power to speak the truth! As a believer, you don’t have to swear to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth! Just tell the truth! You can start by speaking truth to God, the All-powerful One in prayer. You can begin by confessing your sins before God, asking Him into your heart, and trusting Him to lead you into all truth concerning eternal life and salvation for you.

My prayer is we’ll get through dark days and troubling times by speaking truth with power, standing for what’s right, and seeing correct changes in our generation affected by those in power to do so! Amen!
